Yes, the title of this blog is the title Children of the Corn.

(sorry this phenomenal picture is so fuzzy…it’s the best and only available in tiny format from here.)

Why, might you ask? Because it’s official: my brain has been stolen today. It is not working. No matter how hard I try, I cannot seem to get it together. Do you have days like this? Please lie to me and say you do so I don’t feel bad about it. PLEASE!

Ok so I was thinking of corn the other day on my run because, NATCH, I run through corn fields where we live. Corn fields have always scared the be-jesus out of me. I mean, WHAT’S IN THERE?

(How sinister! Stop looking at me, CORN FIELD!)

Do you understand what can happen in a corn field? Have you read The Lovely Bones (scarring)? Have you seen Children of the Corn (haunts me since childhood)? Do you watch “UFO Sightings” (a completely horrific fascination…I will be abducted one day…NON!)??? Hello?! Why WOULDN’T you be terrified of corn fields???

    (Told you.)

I am convinced of their power, therefore, I think that the corn field sucked out my brain when  I drove by it this morning. YES, I am risking sounding nuts. However, this is what I do. I put myself out there assuming that someone will think I’m insane relate to my nuttiness/hilarious life and think I’m insane get something out of it.

    BIG SMILE.

So the other thing is that when I run, I have a clarity of mind that is incomparable. I wish I could do everything while running. I mean everything! I have amazing ideas while I’m running. I always think of 1000 blog topics or solutions to many problems (mine and others’). I’m telling you, I am a GENIUS during my run. Then, I promptly forget them all and go back to my usual non-genius, very human mediocrity. WHAT?! It’s quite frustrating, really. Can someone come up with a way for me to record my thoughts on a run without using an iPhone or dictaphone? How dare I be the crazy girl that dictates while running…I would do it. I swear. I also need a way to type while running. That way I could get twice the work done in half the time once again rendering me a GENIUS.

How’s that for random musings on a Friday??

Even more random and way more entertaining is this blog about Beyonce, the metal chicken by The Blogess.

    Read on, my people.

    Hi Everyone!

The LSAT is done and I am back to just “normal” life with two kids and a part-time jobby job. Wheee! I woke up this morning feeling free. The main reason, not just because of the LSAT being behind me (at least for now), is because it’s Summer: hot, humid, fun SUMMER. And, this Summer, I have new happiness to enjoy:

    1) Long hair = ponytails! Ahh, the ponytails I have missed and the hot necks that have resulted…

    BEFORE (i.e. Last Summer)

    AFTER (as of last weekend):

    2) I am not pregnant this summer so….

    yummy….

    3) Certainly not least but really FIRST (including Davis, naturally) is Anna Banana. You know she came to live with us starting in October. Here she is on her first swim…in her first bathing suit…looking as excited as birthday cake (as usual, yes, even at 1am):

I LOVE her expression. To me, she is saying, “I AM SO FREAKIN’ EXCITED I CAN’T STAND IT!!! AHHHH!!!

Do you SEE my sunglasses bathing suit? DO YOU SEE IT?!”

The suit sans babe (thank you, Ragsland!):

Her little chunky legs and arms CRACK me up in this get-up.

…which is a nice segway to my real point for today: baby bathing suits and such ROCK. Here are a few more I can’t wait to get her body in:

    Rikshaw Design

That’s right, there’s no top to this one.

Scandalous? NON (well, not if your a baby). Darn cute? OUI (again, only if you are a baby).

Mini Boden…duh. Classic. Baby. Classic baby!

And, my baby in pink frosted Wayfarers (Children’s Place)? YES.

I’m partial to the ones she already has, too:

    I mean, SASSY.

OK my people. I will be blogging more and more during these “days of freedom” so keep coming back!

I am settling into this crazy life I have created for myself. WHY have I been MIA in blogging land? See schedule below:

12:30am                                                    Anna…really? I just went to bed two hours ago!

3 am                                                           Anna….Anna….Anna, we need to have a talk, darling. 3am is too early to be smiling and cooing

and being all cute. Although, I have to say, being cute and cuddly at 3am is much preferable to

    being scratchy and really angry!

6:20 am                                                      DING! DING! DING! Time to get up! (Too early.)

7 am                                                            POKE the BEAR (i.e. Wake Davis up. He is NOT a morning person…like his mommie.)

7 am – 8:15 am                                          Convince Davis to eat breakfast. Convince Davis to get dressed.

Convince Davis to get in the car to go to school.

8:15 am                                                      Oh YEAH! I have to get dressed for work.

8:16 am                                                       Anna pukes on clean suit.

8:17 am                                                        I put on a clean suit.

8:18 am                                                        Near miss as Anna spits up again…lands in floor. Clean up floor. Put Anna in car seat.

Go outside and realize it’s colder than I thought. No time for jacket. Off to the day!

8:30 am – 4:30pm                                      WORK (Three days a week. When I am not at the office, things are a bit calmer…I study

in between kid awake time. Sometimes it works out, sometimes not. What are you going

    to do?)

4:45 pm – 5:30pm                                      Pick up kids. No, they are not a long drive away, it just takes this long to get everyone back

in the car (see 7am – 8:15am: Convince Davis to get in the car).

5:30pm – 8:30pm or later…                      Run, Eat, Entertain, Bath, Books, Bed

8:30 pm or later – 10:30pm or later…     Eat with Tripp (usually running around mad feeding everyone else first), do LSAT

homework, maybe have a conversation with Tripp. Two days a week, LSAT class is from

    6pm – 9pm.

10:30pm or later…                                      CRASH into bed.

Give me a “C”! Give me an “R”! Give me an “A”! Give me a “Z”! Give me a “Y”! What’s that spell? TIRED!

Ok so there is a lot going on. The only way I am surviving this nuttiness is:

    1. Davis says the cutest things to me. Last night as he was falling asleep he says, “Mommy, you have really nice manners.”

    2. Anna is so precious, even at 3am.

    3. Tripp is the best husband ever. Ever. EVER.

    4. Coffee (see title)

    5. Claritin (see title and note it is officially pollen season)

Loving life and trying to blog again! (Not sure when in the day I am doing this, actually.)

What’s your crazy life like? Send me stories!!

Ladies and Gents, I have a new room to decorate. Yes! I am so excited. After finishing the nursery for my sweet Anna, I am primed and ready to address my biggest decorating challenge: the kitchen/den combo. Here it is today (don’t judge me badly for it):

Above is the view from the kitchen to the den area. Wow: brightly colored plastic you-know-what and laundry on the chair. Sorry!

Ugh! Could this be more boring? I will say, however, that this is the most comfy chair in the Universe…besides my glider in Anna’s room. BUT, that is no excuse. OUT with it and IN with two pretty chairs (with, hopefully, equivalent comfy-ness)!

Note bolsters…note need of major refresh! (And some gorgeous roman shades would do nicely!)

I know, it’s not terrible. Oh wait, yes it is! I really like the rug, actually, but it does not go with what I want to do. It is FOR SALE. (See pictures below.) If anyone is interested, please let me know. It’s a one-year-old, 6×9 sumac, in stellar condition.  Not sure what I’m asking…make an offer! See anything else you like in there? Well, I’m open to it. Email me!

We have a lot of light in this room (and the whole house). I feel a coastal vibe when I walk in. I’m thinking of painting the walls a “moody blue” like Benjamin Moore’s Gentleman’s Gray:

Don’t you think that will pop nicely with our white wainscoting?

Then, I plan on recovering the nook bolsters in Serena & Lily’s Bark Diamond fabric:

I am 100% inspired by the make-over shown on the Serena & Lily website:

Errr…small picture. Frustrating! Here’s the LINK.

    1. LOVE the basket pendant light. It’s a must to replace the stainless that hangs there now.

Oh! Is that a similar “Gentleman’s Gray” color I see in the background?

Okay, so I got a LOT of inspiration from the newest S&L release!

    2. I have always loved the idea of lots of pillows. It’s also a must for the nook and white sofa, don’t you think?

    3. Matte laminate. Yes, I said LAMINATE. I plan on laminating fabric for a more kid-friendly use. The current nook bolsters are totally and embarrassingly destroyed by Davis’ constant grinding of blueberries, spag sauce, yogurt, you-name-it-anything-that-stains into it. Yuk!

I’ll throw in a seagrass rug and some rockin’ pillows and chairs to pull it all together. My requirements: coastal feel, kid friendly function. That = matte laminate fabric…sounds weird but trust me…it’s amazing! Stay tuned for updates!

Alright all you moms out there…you may sympathize with me on this one or hit me over the head with it. I’m not sure! I have been slow to come back, as you know. But, I now have two kids and am working part-time at my hubby’s law practice. He has sucked me in so much (in a very good way) that I am considering law school! (Way more on that later.) In the meantime, my heart aches for my kiddos as I sit here typing on my break. I miss them oh so much. Who else out there (working out of the home or in the home) feels my drift? Some days I LOVE being in the office. Others, well, I don’t not love it, I just miss this:

So, I picked D up from school early today so I could read him a book before nap time. That’s the beauty of working a mile away from home with the family firm, right?

Maybe the reason I miss them so is that I am a really good worrier. I worry about Davis all the time. I worry about Anna. I worry about seeing them enough, loving them enough, hugging them enough…and the list goes on. Welcome to Motherhood…again…right?! Part of the reason I am such a worry wort about Davis is what we’ve been through in the last few months. I have not been ready to share until now.

The Sunday before Thanksgiving Davis had a massive seizure. That’s right. I said seizure. It lasted 20 minutes. I never in a million years thought I would be riding in an ambulance with my son…for a real medical scare, not just a “for fun” thing at a truck show. We ended up in Pediatric Neurology that night. They sent us home telling us that a lot of young kids have seizures…he’ll not have another. Two weeks later, we were back. We were sent home again and the next day we were back again. We stayed three days that time. We were a wreck. Davis never missed a beat:

Here he is, all smiles, wires all over his head and an IV in his arm, around Christmas time during an overnight EEG study.

Since then we have experienced four more seizures and a lot of “absence” moments during the day. He is on medication to protect his sweet, growing brain. The good news is that the good doctors have not found one thing wrong with that child. It’s a blessing but also unnerving that no one knows why he has these seizures. We are on a regular schedule with the neurologist and visiting Johns Hopkins in April for a second opinion. Tell me, when did parenting become so real?

Yes, today I am feeling a little sorry for myself but that’s okay. Mommyhood comes with ups and downs but with the most intense happiness I’ve ever felt, too. I have a lot to be thankful for, my readers.

One day at a time! I promise more to come again soon…

Hey there my distant friends! Did you give up on me? I hope not completely. I have failed you on all of my promises to be back in action sooner rather than later. I have no excuse. Oh wait, yes, I do! Here they are in no particular order:

    1. Anna

    2. Davis

    3. Anna and Davis

    4. Anna, Davis, seeing my husband at some point before crashing in bed.

    5. Going back to work (and I mean my day job at the law firm)

    6. Studying for the LSAT (Yes, I am studying to try and be admitted to law school. I know, can I add ONE more thing to my plate?)

    7. Anna and Davis

    8. Sleep…wait, that’s not in the cards these days. Nevermind.

Ha!! So, have I exhausted you with this list??? I have a lot of explaining to do, I know. But, know I love each and every one of you and will post as often as I can. In the meantime, I am trying to figure out a way to create more time in the day. Good luck, right?!

    xoxo

You didn’t expect me to be posting from Labor and Delivery did you? Neaux!!!! Well, that is why I have been MIA. Miss Babe arrived last Tuesday at 10:45pm. She is happy and healthy and we are all doing well. Now…I know you have been dying to know her name… What does she look like to you?

I KNOW! She does look just like Anna Elise Bugg.

So…I formally announce that Anna Elise Bugg was born on 10/26/10 at 10:45pm. 6lbs, 8oz, 20 inches!

Here are a few more shots for you:

Davis LOVES his baby sister. LOVES her! Look at her face – one eye on Davis at all times. Hilarious!

As you probably guessed, I’ll be posting randomly over the next few weeks. I have som yummy guest blogs to post, however. So, keep in touch and so will I.

I am sure you’ve heard of this but I feel obligated to share recall information whenever I find it online. Can you believe it? Another recall. What – we hear of one almost once a week these days? Well, all I can say is be careful out there. Here is the article with all the info:

Okay people, I am two weeks away from my due date. See the leek comparison:

I have officially gone on “maternity leave,” except for blog posting, of course. Although, I will say that I will likely be posting every other day now rather than every day. I know! I’m sorry! But, it’s time to focus on family and the new baby. In the next week or so, I’m going to make every effort to rest and take care of myself (something I am not normally good at). I appreciate your understanding and patience in advance!

In honor of this rest and relaxation time…and being unsure of how long it will last…I began to daydream about what I would do for myself. Maybe this would be a good guide for friends of preggers or fathers-to-be to keep in mind for their lovely mommies-to-be.

    1. Clean the house.

I know this does not line up with “rest” and “relaxation” but, oh, man it makes me feel good when everything is clean and in it’s place.

    2. Pedicure! Do I need to explain this one?

    3. An HOUR to myself to have a looooong bath and overall grooming session. Works wonders for the soul, no?

    4. Watch a movie (a girlie one) by myself, uninterrupted. (This never happens anymore, right? Well, if you have kids anyway…) I’m not even sure what I would watch. Suggestions?

    5. Massage. Again, do I need to explain this one?

    6. Lunch with friends…without kids.

    7. Have my hair freshly cut and highlighted. A TRUE game changer!

    8. Have someone else plan dinner. I am not a passionate cook. This would be such a relief to me!

    9. Go to a book store, grab a cup of coffee and walk around for as long as I’d like. To me, there is nothing like the smell of new books!

    10. Walk every day for at least 30 minutes without music…alllll alone.

What would you do for yourself? Let your imagination run wild!!

Yes, I’m having an I LOVE FALL week. I know, it’s all I’ve talked about. But, truly! The weather is changing to that crisp wonderfulness and the trees are changing color….and….we went to a REAL pumpkin patch. I joined Davis’ Pre-School class and had loads of fun. Check it out:

Oh, wait. That’s the HUGE pumpkin down the street from us. It totally rocks. Duh, of course it lights up at night.

Oh wait again. That’s Tripp and Davis with our first carved punkie of the season!

Okay, okay, here’s the fantastic Belmont Pumpkin Farm. I just LOVE living in the country!

The entrance to the hay ride. Yes, we took a real hay ride out to the Patch!

    Davis loving the hay ride!

The actual patch. Yes, there are tons of punkies in there. Look closely…

Davis’ first pick…can you believe he picked that thing up by himself? It is heavy!!

…a more reasonably sized pumpkin, I’d say.

After the perfect pumpkins were chosen, we rode the hay ride back to the main area and noshed on pumpkin spice muffins. Delish!! It was a delightful Fall Virginia day, I must say.

Enjoy this weekend – screaming crunchy leaves, oysters and pumpkin carving!

I’ve been getting the catalogs for a month now…you know, the Pottery Barn Kids Halloween issue, the Oriental Trading Co mag with all the spider rings in it, Halloween Express. Really, though, I haven’t paid much attention until now. I mean, all of a sudden, it’s October 12th and tomorrow I’m going to the pumpkin patch with Davis’ class. OMG! We need to decide on a Halloween costume pronto! And, now that Miss Babe may be coming a week early, I need to find a cutie something for her, too. Here is what I’m scouting so far:

(Disclaimer: I am a HUGE fan of DIY Halloween costumes as opposed to just buying a “kit.” The homemade costume usually just turns out to be better…or funnier…or scarier…and definitely more authentic. I am predicting, however, that I may not have as much time as in past years to throw something together for Davis. Anyone know how to find a picture of the kid duck taped into a superhero costume from the movie One Fine Day??? Know what I mean?!)

Option 1: Cowboy (this totally CRACKS me up!)

Sorry the pic isn’t bigger. Halloween Express!

I know it’s cliche but her last name will be BUGG. Also from Halloween Express.

How about this infant option from Baby Gap? Cute, no?

I think this airplane is a pretty original idea even though it’s Pottery Barn Kids…would be an amazing homemade version:

Loving this simple, cute bee dress from mammajane!

    And, these are positively delightful:

    JLPerillo

Um…TRULY hysterical. A DONUT! Davis, this might be yours, babe.

    Etsy’s Embroider Me Boutique

So, we’ll see! I’ll update you as I expand my search in the next week.

Remember the mural I started a few weeks ago? Read about the beginnings of this seemingly simple project here. As you know, it did not start off in the easiest manner…lots of cutting and taping and arms going dead from holding leaves high on a wall. It did improve, however. I do still have a dead arm and did have to put about two-three coats of paint on it but I said it would be worth it and BOY it was. Here are the pictures in succession:

After two dead arms and taping…

Free hand extensions – the original pattern was not big enough for Miss Babe’s wall!

    First coat…and getting there…

Two coats on the tree trunks…

Three coats of paint on the upper trunks and detail work.

I think this is because the design became skinnier at the top so it was harder to “glop” on the paint!

A picture of the entire wall. Don’t mind the ladder or the removed duvet cover (to keep a monogram spoiler from happening!).

    Overall Project Evaluation:

Expense: $$ (moderate), time expense = $$$$$$ (heavy)

Ease of Use: D+ (read: not easy breezy)

Enjoyment Factor: B+  (This in spite of arm and yoga pants…see “Casualties” below.)

Victories: Painting little-by-little during Davis’ nap time, the just-right, classy look I wanted, an owl in there.

Casualties: Include one dead arm, a pair of black yoga pants, a paint spot on the carpet (oops), belly smudges (wish that big thing didn’t get in the way so much!), three small brushes from Lambchop’s supply.

    Overall Worth-it-ness:             A+

Davis’ new pre-school is very clever. They ask each family to sign up for one week of snacks three times over the entire school year. It’s genius! I don’t ever have to worry about packing a snack for Davis in the mornings. On my assigned snack week, however, I have to provide snacks for the entire class. Fortunately, there are only eight wee three and four-year-olds to feed. How hard can THAT be? Well, not to bad except I was told that the letter of the week is “B.” Hmmm….bananas, blueberries, bananas, bananas, and bananas. These kiddos are out of luck if they don’t like bananas!

I can think of lots of things that start with the letter B, including our last name…it’s making them into a healthy snack that seems tough. I thought I’d share what I have on the menu in the “B” realm…let me know if you have heard of any other fun ideas!

    1. B is for (chocolate) Bananas:

Looks delicious! All you do is slice bananas, melt chocolate chips on top of them and place a dollop of vanilla yogurt in the middle. I think I’m going to add graham crackers to the mix. Monday’s snack? OBLITERATED!

(Picture and recipe from Eating Well.)

    2. “B” is for Blueberry Yogurt Bars:

I do not have a picture for these because I plan on simply buying YoKids blueberry yogurt:

…and pouring it into Popsicle molds:

You could also mix fresh blueberries with vanilla yogurt…I may do this since I’ll have left over yogurt from Monday’s snack.

    TUESDAY’S SNACK: DONE!

    3. “B” is for Banana, Blueberry and Blackberry Parfait:

Again, no picture because I am literally going to slice bananas and toss them with blueberries and blackberries, like a fruit salad. Then, I’ll put a dollop of Cool Whip (delish!) on top. I’ll have more graham crackers left from Monday’s snack as a filler. Voila!

Wednesday’s snack? I laugh at you , you are so easy.

    4. “B” is for Banana Yogurt Bars:

This is a little bit of a repeat but, remember, I have a lot of vanilla yogurt left over…and, bananas. SO…mix banana slices with vanilla yogurt and pour into the popsicle molds again.

Thursday’s snack? You NEVER had a chance. I win!

    5. “B” is for Banana Cupcake Cones:

This is Friday’s snack, so I’m splurging a little bit.

This clever snack found in Parents Magazine is also simple:

    • Prepare banana-cake mix according to package directions. Wrap bottoms of 30 cones (I will not make this many…) in foil to stabilize and place in muffin cups.
    • Pour in batter, filling halfway. Bake 20 minutes at 350 degrees, or until set.
    • Frost with your favorite chocolate icing, add sprinkles. If you want to go a little fancier, add a “cherry” gumdrop to the top!

I think this will be super fun to do this week! I plan on letting Davis help me make each day’s snack the night before. He loves helping me do things like this. What a bonus!

    Have a great Monday!

Here’s a fun little project for you this weekend: DIY drawer liners! I have had a tough time finding drawer liners for Miss Babe’s changing table. See, rather than buying a changing table outright, I bought an ‘antique’ dresser and painted it. Here is the dresser:

Before: (yes, the black thing with a mirror in the back)

After: A fresh coat of white paint and green accents never hurt anyone…

Well, this is what the inside of the drawers looked like (EEESH!):

NO WAY I am putting my baby’s clothes on THAT.

A little trip to Ben Franklin Crafts went a long way to fix my problem. Here are my supplies:

    1. Exacto Knife Set and Cutting Pad:

    2. A selection of my favorite scrapbooking paper (Remember my silhouette project? I used the same paper to match.)

    3. A level or ruler.

    4. Tacky Glue. I tried spray adhesive at first but it was simply a mess and didn’t adhere as well as I liked.

    HOW TO:

    1. Wipe the drawer clean and let it dry. This is very important – the glue will not adhere as well if you skip this step!

    2. Measure and cut your paper:

I used a level but a regular ruler is just fine.

    Careful, there!

    3. Line the back of the paper with Tacky Glue making sure to get as close to the edge as possible. I also filled in the middle for extra adhesive support. Place paper on the drawer:

Smooth the paper with your hands to flatten all bubbles or wrinkles that may have occurred.

    4. Voila! Beautiful drawers!

You may also use cool wrapping paper. It is more ideal size-wise than scrapbook paper. But, I HAD to have the matching paper so I dealt with the 12×12 dimensions. I papered each drawer in a different but coordinating paper.

Ahhh…isn’t that better? Look how cute Miss Babe’s pj’s look on that purple paper.

SO much better than the nasty wood look.

Have fun with this project! Let me know what you end up doing.

Hello again! I am back from my self imposed “black out” period when I refused to look at email, texts, or my laptop for a whole week. I enjoyed it so much that I added yesterday for extra credit. If you haven’t put down the Blackberry in a while, I HIGHLY recommend it. It was so refreshing and a nod to years past (i.e. no cell phone…or the one I did have was called a ‘car phone’) that I am going to impose hours within which I am allowed to touch these techie things and hours within which I am NOT allowed to touch them (look at them, have them in my presence).

So, what did I do for a whole seven days?? BEACH, of course! (Did you really think we could go without another trip to Duck this year?) Wonder how it was? I think this picture of Davis sums it up quite nicely:

Silly, silly boy in his dad’s hat. What caption should we put with this one?? I can think of a lot!

Not to trouble you but there will be another “blackout” period in approximately six weeks. I am still working hard to compile guest posts for all the Choppers out there for at least the first month post-baby girl. By the way, HOW has time passed so quickly?? I have SIX weeks left. That means, naturally, that the baby girl is the size of your average cantalope:

I feel at LEAST this big right now.

Well, I missed you all and will have a treat on crib bedding and other sassy baby items for you tomorrow. Have a lovely Tuesday and why don’t you cut off the cell phone and computer by 6pm, eh?

Are you sitting? I know this is shocking news…

Starting tomorrow, I am GOING DARK for an entire week! What does this mean? It means that I will be shutting off my computer AND my cell phone.

I know. It’s CRAZY! However, next week (the entire week) is dedicated to vacation time (not even house-project time…TRUE vacation time). I was going to try and have a slew of posts lined up for you but with Davis’ birthday tomorrow and everything else we have going on, well, it just didn’t happen. I know you can find it in your hearts to forgive me!

If you have an order for Lambchop, please email me or leave a message. I will certainly call you back first thing Monday the following week.

In the meantime, have a restful week yourselves. The weather is cooling off and it makes me oh, so happy!

I hope everyone had a relaxing, loooong weekend. I really needed the R&R. I am tired but feel like a new person overall. Plus, I am excited! I am 32 weeks along with this baby girl…I truly feel that I am in the home stretch! Here is my weekly veggie comparison:

“Your baby now weighs as much as a jicama.”

I am not familiar with this “jicama.” Are you?

Anyway, I am also excited because our little boy turns THREE on Saturday! This week I have more than several things on my list to get ready for the big bash. He has requested a “blue surfboard” theme. Sure! Why not eek out as much summer as possible, right?

In the spirit of toddler birthdays, I thought I’d re-post a blurb about his second birthday party to show you ideas for your own bash. Of course, throughout the week, I’ll be posting about the surfboard party goodies. Enjoy!

    CUPCAKE STAND STANDOFF!

A friend of mine approached me last summer to help her make a stand for the cupcakes at her son’s 1st birthday party. She handed me a bunch of terra cotta pots and wondered if we could paint them in a fun way. I thought this was an amazing idea! So, for my “nefew,” Mac, I painted these:

This picture isn’t as bright as I’d like but look closely, I painted light blue dots all over the white pots. How did we do it? Well, I turned the pots and trays upside down and painted them white. Then, I painted the light blue dots, Mac’s monogram, and date of birth. For fun, we added a Gerber Daisy through the top (upside-down bottom) of the smallest, top-most pot. Voila! Here are some other pictures of my first cupcake stand:

    The precious family!

    The Top Tier

    The Top Pot with Monogram

I loved the idea so much, I made one for my son, Davis, for his “Big 2″ birthday party! We had a “water” theme going on for his party.  I painted a sailboat with a monogrammed sail on the biggest pot. I used the pot trays to paint “water and waves.” As you can see below, I decided to do a cake and cookies rather than cupcakes. (Side note: We have a fantastic gourmet bakery in the tiny town next to my tiny town called Carried Away Cuisine. DEE-lish and so professional and CUTE! Check it out!)

Here is the desert table. I separated the main “cake” stand to accommodate different desserts and used the pot trays to display the cake and cookies.

The Main Stand: complete with a collection of sassy Gerbers and Zinnias sprouting from the top!

(I couldn’t just leave it plain, right?!)

Davis’ custom cake from Carried Away Cuisine.

I mean, this may have been the BEST cake I’ve ever had. I was dense and moist vanilla almond cake with raspberry filling…DIVINE! You can see how I used one of the “water” painted pot trays to display the cake. It fit PERFECTLY.

I used a bigger pot tray to display the crab and “#2″ cookies we had made. They were also amazing!

When I shopped for the terracotta pots that would ultimately become my stands, I found small pots I thought I could use for something. They ended up being great “moorings” for the main stand. (See pic above.) It was also a great way to display the extra cookies and bring in more of the light blue from the table cloth. Also note the Zinnias on the top…again, I just couldn’t leave it alone!

It was really fun to have a custom stand for the party. It really helped pull our theme together and add a bit of detail that I always look for and love. Let me know if you have questions or want to have one made for your special party!

Of course, I am going to incorporate his cupcake stand into the surf theme in some way. Stay tuned for more info later this week!

Raise your hand if you are or will be nursing a baby within the next year. Me! Raise your hand if you want something more fun than a restaurant napkin to hide the situation and make you more stylish. Me! If you did, I have just the thing for you: a nursing cover round up!

When I nursed Davis, I used a “Hooter Hider.” It was great! And, who doesn’t love that name? Here are a few super cute ones from Embellished Mom.com:

This is the Hooter Hider I used with Davis. I still have it! It still looks good. I will use it again.

The Marmot Blue…even cuter at a $31.50 price!

Isn’t this one so fun and summery?

The Bebe Au Laits and Hooter Hiders are so easy to use, wash, and are compact. I suggest getting two! I also found these (featured yesterday in my What’s In Your Diaper Bag? post):

I love this Maternal America nursing scarf! Wear it around your neck when not nursing:

I ordered the orange/rust color above. I’ll have to get this sassy camel color as well.

And, don’t think I won’t wear these post nursing days!

I’d say all of these beat a restaurant napkin any day.

Happy Friday! Have a safe Labor Day weekend. I’ll be back with you Tuesday (hopefully, without destruction from Earl to report.)

Yes, friends. It’s that time. I need to start making my checklist of items needed while in the hospital post-delivery! I am 31 weeks now…I still have lots of time…but, I like to know what I need to get. And, having had a child already, I’m confident I’ll have what I need without overdoing it. Hopefully, this list will help those of you that need a little guidance. (In no particular order and all important!)

    1. Nursing Supplies: (nursing bra, Medela sheilds, Lansinoh)

This is pretty, no? Last time I bought for PURE function. I hated that! This time, pretty and functional, please!

    Elle Macpherson Intimates

Not to be too personal…I had serious problems getting Davis to latch on in the hospital. These saved my life…and his! I didn’t know about them then. I did the day after we got home and he had lost a pound!

    Medela Sheilds

    The best stuff ever….EVER.

    2. Back-up Bottle and Formula:

There will be differing opinions on this…I found that Born Free bottles were absolutely the best. They don’t have too many crazy parts and are BPA free. Again, I had trouble nursing Davis in the hospital…going to bring a few of these and some formula as back up in case that happens this time.

    3. Comfy Pajamas and robe (nursing = functional, cute and appropriate = can have visitors)

    A Pea in the Pod

Olian knocks it out of the park with these. And, they come with a matching gown for babe!

    4. Comfy slippers and yummy socks (Me no touch hospital floors. Thank you!)

Look at these hot mamas from Cole Haan! I would wear these with jeans. :)

    5. Toiletries: I make another Make-up Bag (small, yet effective. i.e. enough to make me look un-zombie-like, no need for charcoal “smokey” eye, right?!) and  include items I need for an overnight stay (cleanser, eye cream, hairbrush, shampoo/conditioner, etc). Add sanitary napkins. TMI? Maybe. Necessary? Absolutely.

    6. Diaper Bag for baby items: soft, cozy outfit for her and receiving blankets

    7. Going Home Outfit for Me: Think comfy!

Remember this from Friday’s post? This is perfect with leggings and maybe a long-sleeved tee underneath. Thanks, Moody Mamas!

    8. Camera and Video Camera. No, we will not record the birth. Yes, we may record hospital visits!

9.Cash for the pizza man. Yes, I ate an entire pizza after Davis was born. It was the best pizza I’ve had in my life!

    10. My own pillow. My iPod. My iPod speakers. (Gotta have Jack Johnson or Bob Marley soothing my soul during delivery!)

    11. OH! Your favorite lipstick. When all else fails, swiping this on makes me feel better and look a little better. :)

    12. Paperwork: copy of hospital registration, insurance information, phone numbers/email list of friends and family to notify.

    13. Carseat. Do I need to explain this one? Yes, do have it installed about a month before your due date. Yes, go by your neighborhood Fire Station to have it checked.

And…for those of you that aren’t aware…the hospital has a cart that supplies you with diapers, wipes, etc while you are there. Take the surplus home with you! It will get you started and eliminate the need to bring these in your hospital bag.

    Done and DONE!
