Raise your hand if you are or will be nursing a baby within the next year. Me! Raise your hand if you want something more fun than a restaurant napkin to hide the situation and make you more stylish. Me! If you did, I have just the thing for you: a nursing cover round up!

When I nursed Davis, I used a “Hooter Hider.” It was great! And, who doesn’t love that name? Here are a few super cute ones from Embellished Mom.com:

This is the Hooter Hider I used with Davis. I still have it! It still looks good. I will use it again.

The Marmot Blue…even cuter at a $31.50 price!

Isn’t this one so fun and summery?

The Bebe Au Laits and Hooter Hiders are so easy to use, wash, and are compact. I suggest getting two! I also found these (featured yesterday in my What’s In Your Diaper Bag? post):

I love this Maternal America nursing scarf! Wear it around your neck when not nursing:

I ordered the orange/rust color above. I’ll have to get this sassy camel color as well.

And, don’t think I won’t wear these post nursing days!

I’d say all of these beat a restaurant napkin any day.

Happy Friday! Have a safe Labor Day weekend. I’ll be back with you Tuesday (hopefully, without destruction from Earl to report.)

Yes, friends. It’s that time. I need to start making my checklist of items needed while in the hospital post-delivery! I am 31 weeks now…I still have lots of time…but, I like to know what I need to get. And, having had a child already, I’m confident I’ll have what I need without overdoing it. Hopefully, this list will help those of you that need a little guidance. (In no particular order and all important!)

    1. Nursing Supplies: (nursing bra, Medela sheilds, Lansinoh)

This is pretty, no? Last time I bought for PURE function. I hated that! This time, pretty and functional, please!

    Elle Macpherson Intimates

Not to be too personal…I had serious problems getting Davis to latch on in the hospital. These saved my life…and his! I didn’t know about them then. I did the day after we got home and he had lost a pound!

    Medela Sheilds

    The best stuff ever….EVER.

    2. Back-up Bottle and Formula:

There will be differing opinions on this…I found that Born Free bottles were absolutely the best. They don’t have too many crazy parts and are BPA free. Again, I had trouble nursing Davis in the hospital…going to bring a few of these and some formula as back up in case that happens this time.

    3. Comfy Pajamas and robe (nursing = functional, cute and appropriate = can have visitors)

    A Pea in the Pod

Olian knocks it out of the park with these. And, they come with a matching gown for babe!

    4. Comfy slippers and yummy socks (Me no touch hospital floors. Thank you!)

Look at these hot mamas from Cole Haan! I would wear these with jeans. :)

    5. Toiletries: I make another Make-up Bag (small, yet effective. i.e. enough to make me look un-zombie-like, no need for charcoal “smokey” eye, right?!) and  include items I need for an overnight stay (cleanser, eye cream, hairbrush, shampoo/conditioner, etc). Add sanitary napkins. TMI? Maybe. Necessary? Absolutely.

    6. Diaper Bag for baby items: soft, cozy outfit for her and receiving blankets

    7. Going Home Outfit for Me: Think comfy!

Remember this from Friday’s post? This is perfect with leggings and maybe a long-sleeved tee underneath. Thanks, Moody Mamas!

    8. Camera and Video Camera. No, we will not record the birth. Yes, we may record hospital visits!

9.Cash for the pizza man. Yes, I ate an entire pizza after Davis was born. It was the best pizza I’ve had in my life!

    10. My own pillow. My iPod. My iPod speakers. (Gotta have Jack Johnson or Bob Marley soothing my soul during delivery!)

    11. OH! Your favorite lipstick. When all else fails, swiping this on makes me feel better and look a little better. :)

    12. Paperwork: copy of hospital registration, insurance information, phone numbers/email list of friends and family to notify.

    13. Carseat. Do I need to explain this one? Yes, do have it installed about a month before your due date. Yes, go by your neighborhood Fire Station to have it checked.

And…for those of you that aren’t aware…the hospital has a cart that supplies you with diapers, wipes, etc while you are there. Take the surplus home with you! It will get you started and eliminate the need to bring these in your hospital bag.

    Done and DONE!

First of all, thanks to everyone for understanding that a girl needs a break every once in a while. Secondly, I am ready (and sane enough) to explain to you what’s been going on and why I needed a mental health day! Fortunately for me, my day off yesterday was blessed with a happy child and 75 degree weather. Ahhhhhh!!!! It was truly awesome!

As you know from previous posts, we recently moved Davis from a crib to a toddler bed. (We just took the rail off of his crib and gave him new digs.) It was going really well!! And then, it wasn’t. As of today, the child has not napped in over 10 days. Some say he’s done with naps. I say he’s not. I was hoping the novelty of being able to get out of bed and play would wear off. I could give it another few weeks but we have a lot of newness coming our way. He needs his rest in order to deal with a new school, new schedule, and, of course, a new baby.

The bottom line is that the babe is not ready for not taking naps. He has always been the kid that if he naps well, he sleeps well at night. He has been so tired that we have had to battle bad moods that lead to worse moods that lead to no one sleeping and everyone being cranky. There has also been a spell of biting, hitting, clawing and overall totally freak out sessions (to be clear, all the violence comes from Davis’ side of the table, not ours!). It’s been a lot too much to take. For those of you without kids or about to have kids, please excuse my brutal honesty!

Here is what I found Friday afternoon around 3pm:

He’d only been asleep for 30 minutes. In our former non-toddler bed life, he would have been waking up from an hour and a half nap and happy as a lark.

Here he is at 3:15 pm that same day…

If you look very, very closely, you’ll see a “chalk outline” of stickers around his body. I’m telling you, it was a toy crime scene!

Here is what I found yesterday at 3 pm:

TRUE crime scene! Look at his stuffed elephant: he couldn’t take it anymore either. It’s hilarious, I know. But, I feel bad for the little guy. And, no, this doesn’t happen every day. These are the only two times he’s slept at all during the day in the past two weeks.

As is the obvious, he is eventually napping…it’s just right when it’s time to get up. The big question: WILL HE EVENTUALLY GIVE UP and start napping again? OR, do we need to put his crib back together? Maybe he simply wasn’t ready yet.

For experiment #2, we did end up putting the crib rail back up last night. He’s spent the night at my mom’s last night. We’ll see how he takes the news when he gets home this afternoon… As always, I would love your thoughts, Choppers.

Everyone needs a day off once in a while, right? Well, you guessed it. I do! Today, lovely blog readers, I am taking a “mental health day” so that I can rest and recoup from a trying week of attempting to keep a toddler in his bed. It’s been interesting! I need this:

I’ll be back tomorrow with more pregnancy and crazy mom life fun. Have a great Wednesday!

Hi Tuesday Bloggers! I thought I’d post this two days in a row in case some of you didn’t see this post from yesterday. I need a few guest bloggers for November. Read on!

I am officially 30 weeks pregnant today. Woot! Here is the veggie my babe is being compared to:

Yes, of course. That is a large cabbage.

Not sure what I’m talking about? Read my post about babies and veggies HERE.

My friends, this means that I am getting close. This is the true HOME STRETCH. Baby girl will be here in a little over two months! This makes me wonder…what do I need to do that I am not doing already?

Anyone that knows me even a little knows that a) the picture above is not me, 2) I am a BIG planner. So it’s no surprise that I had a “planning” conversation with my doctor last week about baby girl’s  arrival. We live about an hour and a half from the hospital. Being the planner I am, I wanted to know from my doc how much we could “plan” her arrival so I am not stuck giving birth to her on I-64. (NO!) The conversation also triggered a few other planning items I need to secure.

I’m due on November 1st. If this child is anything like my first, she won’t be here until November 11th. BUT, it’s possible I could have her before then. We’ll just have to see. LOOOOONG story short…I need to line up several lovely guest bloggers to provide you all with interesting and fun reads for the first month after Little Girl arrives. I already have a few in my pocket. You will love them! I need more, however.

If you are interested in writing a post for me, let’s discuss! Here are my thoughts for guest blogging:

    1. You are able to write with gusto! Do not hold back and show your personality.

    2. You can write about a neat project you have done for your kids/home, a challenging child situation where you came out on top (read: mommy and daddy, score 1. Child, score 0.) and how your experience can help us all, or a great idea for room decor/how you have used Lambchop Designs in your life.

    3. If you are in the “kid” business, you could write about what you do and make sure you have a fun idea for us all.

    4. You can tell us why you read this particular blog. In other words, WHY do you want to guest blog and WHY do you read Lambchop Designs?

Please email me at info@lambchopdesigns.com or go HERE and let me know if you are interested and what you want to write about. I’ll review them all and I’ll need final versions by Wednesday, September 22nd.

I can’t wait to see what you submit!! Thanks for your help in advance!

Have a great Monday and see you tomorrow.

I fear that I like too many ideas for Miss Babe’s nursery! You know, you can’t do a crazy light fixture, crazy artwork, a bold, bold everywhere color scheme and a funky mobile. That’s too much, right? Well, we’ll see. I say you get everything in the room and then make cuts. In the meantime, my latest DIY project is making an origami mobile for her room. It may go over the glider or the crib…or the twin bed. Not sure! So far I’ve made a few purple cranes:

And a really tiny orange and red one:

Here are a few I found online as inspiration:

LOVE this one featured on Craftzine.com

    Design Sponge’s sassy fish mobile!

Adorable polka dots from Spare Bedroom Studio

Origami butterflies as clever wall art…from Layla Lou Studio

I’m thinking of adding these to my repertoire on the “Shop” page…what do you think? I haven’t found the right bamboo sticks (or tree branches from my yard – not kidding) from which to hang the cranes…yet. But, I’ll keep you posted!

    Have a restful weekend!

Soooooooooo I told you about a fun little project involving silhouettes a few weeks ago. I found a brilliant explanation/version of this project in Nonpareil Magazine. Here is my post on Nonpareil. Here is the photo of the beautiful result:

I love the idea of this in the nursery. I also love the clever use of old frames spray painted to your liking!

Yesterday during nap time, I decided to take this on myself. You can, too (or you can email me and I’ll make yours for you!)

Here’s what you need for the project:

    1. Profile picture(s) of whomever you are “silhouetting.” Here is Davis’:

This picture makes me feel like I could reach out and touch him!

    2. Cool paper (a solid for the silhouette and a neat pattern for the background…or v.v. Be creative!):

My choice for the silhouette cut-out. Remember, our nursery is plum and grass green!

I was thrilled when I found these coordinating papers! I chose paper prints with variations of purple and green, of course!

    3. Permanent Adhesive:

This stuff is the best – not messy, very effective.

    4. A pencil with an eraser, some sharp scissors, and a steady hand.

    5. A frame (I used an 8×10 plainie Janie frame from Walmart):

    Here’s how you do it:

    1. Cut out the profile of the picture you chose.

    2. Place cut-out picture on the solid paper and trace the picture cut-out with a pencil:

A little hint: Make sure your solid paper is the same size as the frame you are using…or make sure the size of the silhouette will fit nicely on your background paper before cutting. Sizing these takes a bit of trial and error, patience, and a copier. You may have to blow up the original picture or decrease the size depending on how you want it to look.

(I used the matting to size it correctly so I’d have the right proportions.)

    3. Cut out the traced silhouette on the solid paper very carefully and smoothly (here’s where the sharp scissors and steady hand come in!).

    4. Make sure your printed paper is the right size for the frame you chose. I used an 8×10 and had 12×12 printed paper to work with, hence, I cut the 12×12 to fit the 8×10 frame. (Again, I simply used the matting to size and cut the paper.)

    5. Use the permanent adhesive on one side of your cut-out silhouette. Mount it on the printed paper just so. I don’t think there are any rules here…centered, funkily placed, whatever you wish. Go for it!

    6. Toss the matting and place the printed paper with your silhouette in the frame. Voila! (Note: I did not paint the frames…yet. I may paint them green. I’ll have to see how it all ties with the rest of the wall art first! If you do paint them, I’d prime them first and just use spray paint. Simple!)

Here are two of mine. I am going to hang one of everyone in the family, including our dog, Alice. They will go around a mirror above the changing table a la picture from Nonpareil!

    Davis

    Alice

Done and DONE! Try it and let me know your thoughts. Again, if you just want it done for you, let me know and we’ll discuss. I am happy to do it for you!

I know you’ve been itching for an update on the status of Davis and his “new” room and big boy bed…and our potty training efforts. If you remember my post from a few weeks ago, we did a wonderful job of convincing him he is no longer a baby  (TOO good of a job). We then convinced him that diapers are for babies. A + B = C, right? That’s right. Therefore, if Davis is not a baby, he shouldn’t wear diapers. He took that literally and we had about a week of him going wherever, whenever, without warning (read: LOTS of laundry…his and ours). It was dee-lightful! But, he was trying really hard so I didn’t mind. Fast forward to two weeks later…he is telling us every time he has to go. And, he wants to go on the big potty, not the training potty. Amazing!! Turns out our theory was correct. He was simply too dependent on the diapers. They were  too easy and convenient. Yay Davis!

Well, naturally, after a few days of no accidents, we did another excellent job of convincing him that 1) he doesn’t wear diapers anymore, therefore he is not a baby, 2) babies sleep in cribs (as evidenced in the ever-coming-together nursery down the hall from his room), 3) again, A + B = C…. if he is not a baby, then he should not sleep in a crib/baby bed. So, we officially converted his crib, made the changing table a dresser, and rearranged his room completely. We also bought him a “Big boy present package” just for his bed. He LOVES it. And, he is so proud of himself. AND, he has STAYED in the bed, even for nap time.  YAY DAVIS!!!!

    Here is his “new” room:

I know, I know. You want to hear about his “big boy present package.” I was worried he would not understand that he can’t get out of bed whenever he wants to (even though he technically can). So, we bought “Momo,” the toddler sleep training monkey clock from Baby Zoo. Observe:

You set “Momo” to wake up at a certain time. Then, you turn the alarm “on.” All that means is that Momo closes his eyes. Davis LOVES this because Momo goes nite-nite when he does. Then, in the morning, when Momo wakes up (you may set it to a silent mode or he can open his eyes to jungle sounds), Davis knows it’s okay to come get us (ONLY if Momo’s eyes are open). Genius! And, what’s more genius…it works. I swear! Davis thinks Momo rocks.

We also now allow him one “special” item to bring in bed with him. Usually, it’s a special book for that particular night. Once he picks out his book, he gets in bed and we say prayers, etc. Then, he is allowed to read his book with this special pal:

The “Manely” Glowing Flashlight by Little Tykes. Yes, you guessed it. It roars when you turn it on. And, it’s very easy for tots to operate.  So cool!

Needless to say, we are pretty proud parents of our little chicken. He is certainly not a baby anymore. This is good – we were all ready. Plus, I have a “one-baby-at-a-time” policy. And the new baby will be here very, very soon.

    Have a restful day!

Part of preparing for our daughter’s arrival in October/November is brainstorming about what worked and what didn’t with our son, Davis, when he was an infant. My checklist of “not again” items include the papazan (cradle swing), the HUGE car seat (how did I not know I was buying an extra wide?),  a very narrow rocking chair (see commentary on Glider Glory), and not sleeping when he slept. My checklist of “do’s” include an indestructible diaper bag (see Diaper Quest posts 1 & 2), a no-fuss stroller (read: NOT the Graco Travel System…another discussion for another day), and, most valuable of them all: a baby feeding/sleeping/diapering log. That’s right. I wrote down EVERY move Davis Bugg made from the time he was seven weeks old until he was 17 months old. It was a pain at first, I admit. But, once I got used to doing it, it was a breeze. And, it was immensely helpful to identify sleeping patterns, sick/not sick symptoms, among other important things.

Last time, I used a trusty notebook:

    Sexy, isn’t she?

The notebook was great. It’s simple, no fuss, and you can write whatever you want in it. Problems arose when I was 1) not by a clock and needed to write down the time something happened or how long he nursed (often), 2) trying to find the next blank page…no bookmark (or lost my bookmark) and hard to flip through when holding an infant who’s spitting up all over you and the notebook, 3) trying to write things down after a 3am feeding…in the dark.

Imagine my surprise and excitement when I found this GEM from Skip Hop today:

Isn’t she gorgeous? Just looking at her makes my nerdy side quiver with delight. (I am a big geek when it comes to organizational products, new pencils, and untouched loose leaf paper…everyone has their own issues, okay?!)

So get this: ALL my problems are solved with this handy book.

    1) It has a built-in glowing time/date clock. The clock is not only useful for telling time in the dark, telling time in the light, but it also lights up the pages for night time recording. I’m killing two birds with one stone on this one! Oh, and did I mention it has a timer on it, too? WONDERFUL!!

Look at how that beautiful clock light fits right into the book. GENIUS! I have to admit I am jealous: I didn’t think of this. WHY?

    2) It comes with a bookmark.

    3) It is small enough to fit in the diaper bag. KEY.

    4) You can order additional pages after you fill it up for the first six months.

Bottom line is I ordered it. Unfortunately, the website says they are out of stock. BUT, Amazon has it.  I can’t wait to get it in the mail. I’ll let you know the “hands on” opinion after I play with it!

“How’s the nursery coming?” is the question I am asked most these days. The answer? ALMOST DONE. I am so happy! One of our remaining efforts is in my comfy, cushy new glider. I am particularly excited about this addition because when Davis was an infant we physically did not have room for one. He had an adorable Jenny Lind rocker (I am thinking of selling it if anyone is interested) that fit in his tiny nursery….almost.

Now, however, we have a big nursery. The glider will slide in quite nicely in the left corner by the windows (excuse the semi-dark picture):

I looked at several gliders including these:

Land of Nod: I spy a throw pillow that will be going in the nursery…

Serena and Lily: The Presidio Glider. So beautiful…so more than I want to spend!

Pottery Barn Kids: The Dream Rocker. I want a dream rocker…maybe just not a seat, you know?!

Rosenberry Rooms: The City Glider…in apple green, of course!

I was truly sold, however,  when I sauntered into a local store (Rattle and Roll) the other day and spotted Little Castle rockers all in a row. AND, they are all 20% off until July 31st. Um…you know I can’t resist a sale. AND, it happens to be the MOST comfortable seat I’ve ever enjoyed. EVER. I was also enticed by their “you may provide your own fabric” idea. No restrictions! Love it, love it, love it. Here she is:

I decided to go with “Camelot White” which is a light, fluffy cotton linen blend fabric for the upholstery. I may request apple green piping…joy! I’ll be gracing it with an apple green throw and a funky pillow. Keeping it white is keeping it serene…just what you need at 1am, 3am, 5am and even 7am.

Have a happy Tuesday and let me know what your favorite glider is!

Oh NO! I am totally blowing my budget for the new baby!!! Did you get the new Mini Boden catalog yesterday? I did. It is overwhelming how many cute things are in that catalog. I played a trick on myself: I went to the website and acted like I could spend whatever I wanted…put 15 things in the shopping cart. I cannot eliminate ONE THING. I just CANNOT! And, the 15% off, free shipping gig does NOT help. Here’s a sneak peak if you didn’t get the catalog (bless you if you have restraint).

The elephant with bird KILLS me. KILLS ME!

Seriously?!! My heart ACHED for this one. I can’t wait to put it on her chubby body. :)

    Tights for both dresses…

    Uh oh. I heart hedgehogs!

    Pretty little cords…

Could this be any cuter? The answer is no.

She cannot have enough dresses, right?!

I’ll have the dress AND the cardigan, please.

So, you see? I have no restraint…and now less money. Ouch! Oh well, this kid will be dressed to the nines, as they say!

    More tomorrow!

Yesterday, Tripp and I went together to my 24 week prenatal checkup. I had an ultrasound. I haven’t talked about this until now because I had to make sure everything was a-okay. It is – this is the good news. I want to share this brief story with you, however, because maybe it will help quell some concerns of the ONE in FOUR pregnancies that experience a condition with their baby called Choroid Plexus Cysts (CPC). CPC are cysts found in the growing baby’s brain. Yes, you read that right: cysts on the baby’s brain. Scary, right? Well, I freaked out when they told me this news after my 20 week ultrasound. It was, “YAY! It’s a girl!!!! ……she has CPC on a part of her brain. (What did you say? What is CPC??) There are four cysts. It may be nothing but to make sure you need to visit the High Risk Pregnancy Doctor for a Fetal Scan.” O.M.G.

For any of you that have heard those words or are currently hearing those words, I’m with you. I cried and cried and cried. I read about stories when the person says, “But this can’t happen to me.” You think, “Well, of course it can happen to you if it can happen to anybody, right?” When it’s you….it’s disbelief. It CAN’T happen to ME.

I was good, though, and didn’t Google “CPC” as soon as I got home. Searching the internet can lead to dangerous information…too much information. I had a friend look it up for me. The bottom line was that it is common (1 in 4 pregnancies) and in those that CPC’s show up, there is a 99% chance it’s nothing, that they go away by 28 weeks. I didn’t want to know about the 1%. I know, this probably seems like I had nothing to worry about. Remember, though, everything is supposed to be fine and perfect (I mean, it’s my baby, right?).

Two days after this news, we went back for the Fetal Scan. The Fetal Scan confirmed that there were, in fact, four cysts in Miss Babe’s brain. It also confirmed that they were small. They examined every aspect of her in robust detail and explained that the hands are a big indicator of whether she is in the scary 1%. (After this visit, I looked up the 1%. I am not going to discuss it here). Her fingers were (and still are) long and not crossing each other…apparently an indicator of the 1%. Good news.

So, back to yesterday, we were hopeful but still holding our breath that these cysts would be completely gone. They are 100% gone. WHEW!!

The frustrating thing about this drama is that researchers think CPC’s are a normal part of fetal development. I’ll say that again “NORMAL” part of fetal development. It’s our advanced ultrasound technology that is now able to pick these things up. Kind of a double-edged sword, no? We know more than ever about fetal development but things like this cause a pregnant woman to go crazy with worry. If this is you right now, DO NOT WORRY. I know it’s hard, but remember, 99% chance is really, really good.

I hope this is not too personal or “real” for a Wednesday. I am just EXTREMELY relieved that everything checked out. I still have to have another follow-up ultrasound in a month. Now, however, I am encouraged we will have smooth sailing from now until Miss Babe’s arrival.

Have a happy, happy, worry-free day!

Thanks for your patience, everyone!! Our trip to New Orleans couldn’t have been more fun. We rode the Street Car:

visited good friends with a new baby (Davis LOVED the baby):

and had a great time with long-time friends:

We also rocked the Audubon Zoo and rode lots of airplanes, airport trams and buses to cars (rental and otherwise).  The weather was a little sketchy yesterday, naturally, putting us on “ground hold” in New Orleans for about three hours. Thanks, Atlanta Hartsfield! Thankfully, our connection in ATL was delayed as well. We didn’t miss any flights and finally arrived home after driving through a torrential downpour at 11pm. Doesn’t sound bad….unless you understand what it’s like to travel with a connection and a two-year-old that hasn’t napped and is WAY over-stimulated. Let’s just say we are home in one piece.

While catching up on all things Lambchop this morning, I noticed a lovely invitation from a friend to Zulily. Have you heard of it? I had but hadn’t pursued membership. I was thoroughly pumped to receive the invite! Of course, I had to immediately sign up and search the bevy of discounted kids gear there. I found some pretty sassy, sweet finds! Davis can be super funny and sassy a lot of the time…these would be perfect for him:

    From Dogwood

From Dogwood as well. And, it’s right. Who needs sleep anyway???

How much do I love this Motley Crue, Dr. Feelgood tee? TONS. I may love the company’s name who makes it better…Rowdy Sprout. Perf!

And a keeper from Cafe Press:

    Break it down!

Go rock on with your bad selves. See you tomorrow!

    My husband reads Men’s Health.

I sometimes swipe it from him. I like to 1) make sure the info on women he is reading is correct (Yes, it’s true. Women (1) don’t like it when men walk up to them (me) and say things like, “I think an angel must be missing from Heaven….”), 2) read up on ab workouts I cannot do (read: check out the cover model’s story…unfortunately, it is usually just about how he maintains his abs and not about his role as a vampire in Twilight), and 3) look at the healthy recipes they print. Yes, Men’s Health prints recipes!

Yesterday, my hubs sent me this link: Short Order Cook. We cook recipes from the magazine a lot. Most of the time they are easy and fool proof. I love it! (Please read my quip about not cooking or having time to cook from Thursday’s post here.) These recipes are a few of our favorites:

    Seared Skirt Steak With Tomatoes

    1 1/2 tsp olive oil
1 skirt steak or flank steak (12 oz)
    Salt and pepper to taste
2 cups cherry tomatoes (different colors work nicely)
    2 cloves garlic, thinly sliced
    2 Tbsp balsamic vinegar
    4 cups arugula

    1. Heat the oil in a cast-iron or stainless-steel pan (or grill pan) on medium high. When the pan is very hot, season the steak with a few pinches of salt and pepper, and add it to the pan. Cook the steak for 3 to 4 minutes a side, until it’s caramelized and slightly firm to the touch. Remove it to a cutting board.

    2. While the steak rests, lower the heat to medium, and add the tomatoes and garlic to the pan. Cook for 1 to 2 minutes until the garlic is lightly browned. Add the balsamic vinegar and cook for 2 more minutes, until the skins of the tomatoes start to split. Remove the pan from the heat; add salt and pepper.

    3. Slice the steak thinly against its grain. Divide the arugula between two plates, top each pile with the steak slices, and pour on the tomatoes and pan drippings. Makes 2 servings.

    Per serving: 460 calories, 47 grams (g) protein, 11 g carbohydrates (2 g fiber), 24 g fat, 150 milligrams sodium

    Chipotle Turkey Burgers

    8 oz lean ground turkey
2 wheat or whole-grain buns, toasted
    1/2 avocado, sliced
    2 Tbsp chipotle salsa
    1/4 tsp salt
    1/4 tsp pepper
    Pinch of cumin
    1 tomato, sliced
    1/2 red onion, thinly sliced
    2 Tbsp low-fat sour cream

    1. Mix the meat, salt, pepper, and cumin, and form it into two equal patties.

    2. Preheat a skillet or frying pan over medium-high heat. Coat with a bit of oil and add the burgers, cooking them for 4 to 5 minutes a side, until slightly firm to the touch.

    3. Dress each bun with avocado slices, tomato, and red onion. Top with the burger, sour cream, and salsa.

    Per serving 419 calories, 27 g protein, 37 g carbs, 21 g fat (5 saturated), 7 g fiber, 685 mg sodium

Enjoy your summer weekend! I’m off to New Orleans. It’s true!

Yes, that is really me at The Columns.

Little Davis will be three in September. I cannot believe it’s two months away! He also starts a brand new school the beginning of September and HAS to be potty trained to go there (work in progress). He ALSO gets a new baby sister in October/November. He ALSO, technically, should be moving from his crib to a big boy bed or toddler bed. WHEW! Can someone give this kid a break? I mean, that is A LOT going on for him, don’t you agree?

As his mother, I feel completely responsible for all of these mighty milestones being thrust upon him. I started to think about what we could change or not change about the situation to reduce stress on the little guy. I obviously can’t help that he will turn three. Unchangeable. And, I can’t really change his school situation…paid for. Therefore, I cannot stop trying to get him fully potty trained by the end of August…again, work in progress. And, this baby girl is coming whether anyone likes it or not.  So, the easiest thing I can do for him is to let him keep his bed, right?

I’m asking you, is this a silly thought? Should I be converting him to a toddler bed? Is it my own fear that he won’t stay in it and be traumatized that’s holding him back? Or, is he really not ready? He towers over the crib railing but will not climb out. I honestly don’t know why! I would love your thoughts! In the meantime, let’s explore what his toddler bed would look like if we decide to go that route.

    Here is the crib now:

Here is the Pottery Barn Kids photo of what it should look like when converted to a toddler bed (ours is not white, however):

Here are the sheets and quilt I love for for the bed. D will ultimately have to pick them out, however. Ok, well, here are his choices (all from PBK…so easy!):

Don’t forget to send me your stories on crib to bed transitions – I truly need advice!!

A friend and fellow blogger has asked me to guest blog on her site over the weekend. What an honor! If you haven’t checked out The Birthday Girl Blog, you are in for a treat. She writes about great party ideas and the value of adding detail to any theme. Below is the blog post I penned for her site. Enjoy!

    Hi Everyone,

My name is Adrianne Bugg and I own Lambchop Designs, LLC. Lambchop Designs is a business devoted to making kid’s rooms more fun. We provide a vast collection of “Fun Art for Cool Kids!” (among other things like super great t-shirts!) Anyway, Becca asked me to guest blog today and I couldn’t be more excited! I love talking parties so let’s get to it.

A friend of mine approached me last summer to help her make a stand for the cupcakes at her son’s 1st birthday party. She handed me a bunch of terra cotta pots and wondered if we could paint them in a fun way. I thought this was an amazing idea! So, for my “nefew,” Mac, I painted these:

This picture isn’t as bright as I’d like but look closely, I painted light blue dots all over the white pots. How did we do it? Well, I turned the pots and trays upside down and painted them white. Then, I painted the light blue dots, Mac’s monogram, and date of birth. For fun, we added a Gerber Daisy through the top (upside-down bottom) of the smallest, top-most pot. Voila! Here are some other pictures of my first cupcake stand:

    The precious family!

    The Top Tier

    The Top Pot with Monogram

I loved the idea so much, I made one for my son, Davis, for his “Big 2″ birthday party! We had a “water” theme going on for his party.  I painted a sailboat with a monogrammed sail on the biggest pot. I used the pot trays to paint “water and waves.” As you can see below, I decided to do a cake and cookies rather than cupcakes. (Side note: We have a fantastic gourmet bakery in the tiny town next to my tiny town called Carried Away Cuisine. DEE-lish and so professional and CUTE! Check it out!)

Here is the desert table. I separated the main “cake” stand to accommodate different desserts and used the pot trays to display the cake and cookies.

The Main Stand: complete with a collection of sassy Gerbers and Zinnias sprouting from the top! (I couldn’t just leave it plain, right?!)

Davis’ custom cake from Carried Away Cuisine.

I mean, this may have been the BEST cake I’ve ever had. I was dense and moist vanilla almond cake with raspberry filling…DIVINE! You can see how I used one of the “water” painted pot trays to display the cake. It fit PERFECTLY.

I used a bigger pot tray to display the crab and “#2″ cookies we had made. They were also amazing!

When I shopped for the terracotta pots that would ultimately become my stands, I found small pots I thought I could use for something. They ended up being great “moorings” for the main stand. (See pic above.) It was also a great way to display the extra cookies and bring in more of the light blue from the table cloth. Also note the Zinnias on the top…again, I just couldn’t leave it alone!

It was really fun to have a custom stand for the party. It really helped pull our theme together and add a bit of detail that I always look for and love. Let me know if you have questions or want to have one made for your special party!

If you aren’t as keen on the custom route or don’t have time to have one made, I have found some other really cute cake stand options:

I love the bright colors in these different height cake stands from Pottery Barn Kids

Hmmm….I can’t decide what I like better, this funky stand from Williams Sonoma or the beautiful cupcakes on it!

What a cutie!! I love this red dot stand from Amazon. Yes, AMAZON!

Of course, if you want me to paint a flower pot stand for your upcoming bash, let me know!

Thanks, Becca for the opportunity to post on Birthday Girl!

I hope you all had a fun weekend! Ours was jam-packed with great fun (see schedule from Friday’s blog here). In addition to all the fun stuff, I ran the Lambchop Designs booth at the Irvington Farmer’s Market. What an amazing Market – record numbers of people from all over, record breaking weather (high of 83…thank you!), and the best show we’ve had this year! Thanks to everyone that stopped by to say hello!

If you weren’t able to make it, I’m sorry to say that you missed a few things…1) we had a special drawing for a FREE painting for those that came by, 2) the new crab design t-shirts debuted and were wildly popular. The winner of the drawing (congrats, Lori!) will be able to choose a painting valued at $100 or less to adorn her child’s walls. I can’t wait to see what she picks!! As for the crab shirts, you didn’t totally miss out. I still have some left! BUT, (and, this is important) you need to reserve your shirt immediately. They will be posted for sale online in our new Etsy Shop as well as on this website later this week. It’s very possible I will sell out! Here is a sneak peak:

The Infant Crab Tee (white shirt with a red crab). It is $25 and available in 6 months, 12 months, or 18 months sizes. I’ll ship it to you anywhere in the US for $5.

Here is the Toddler Crab Tee. (Also white with red crab (difference is the red ringer), $25, $5 shipping in the US.)

This is a close-up of le crab!

And here is how it comes to you!

Let me know what size you need, Choppers!

Have a great day – back to reality!
